Unplug: The best parent controls. By Kate Brennan

I find myself flooded and overwhelmed with the multitude of venues that offer entertainment to us. How do we monitor all this information that is blasting its way into the lives of our families? Communication devices are many and are changing rapidly. Most include video and internet capabilities. It feels like a full time job just trying to keep up and filter this information.

There have been some recent developments that help families cope with the ever changing landscape. The Child Safe Viewing Act (S 602) was passed unanimously last year. It is a bill that encourages manufacturers to place advanced blocking and parental controls over multiple platforms. The challenge is that it is still up to the parents to stay vigilant and keep up with the ever changing devices. During my research for this article, I came across You Tube’s new parent controls. I was never able to figure out how to implement them. Perhaps you will have better luck.

And that is just my point. Are we really expected to spend hours placing parent controls on all the varied multimedia platforms in our homes? How could we ever keep up?

Our children are taking part in a grand experiment. This is a new age. Electronics are embedded in their lives to a degree that is unprecedented. Think what it must have been like before there was television, radio even. Our engagement with the natural world was much deeper. While technology has made our lives easier in many ways, we may now be tipping the balance too far. The risk may be that we are not engaging our children enough in deep and meaningful ways. Although technology can be a powerful tool for gaining knowledge, it can also be used excessively for mindless entertainment that is full of stereotyped images of men and women.

My best advise for Parent controls? Unplug.
